kids clothing and painting

painting can be messyKids have a way of getting their clothes dirty no matter how hard we try to prevent it. There’s no such thing as a sparkly clean child. From mud pies and puddles to mashing, squishing and painting throughout the house, kids are always into something messy. We should give them a hand, they definitely know something we’ve forgotten… messy is a lot of fun!

The biggest problem with messy is that messy can ruin clothing. So what do we do to prevent our kids clothing from becoming stained or otherwise damaged from all that mess making fun? Kids should be kids, but there’s no reason it should continually cost money buying new clothes.

Tips to help protect your child’s clothing and still allow all the happiness of mess making:

  • Play clothes vs Nice clothes – Have a set of clothing that is “just for play” and make sure your child understands. Growing up I remember having a set of “play clothes” and a set of “school clothes”. It’s easy enough to change when they get home from school.
  • Prevent permanent stains – Make sure to check clothing at bedtime once your kids have changed into their pajamas. This is a good time to make sure there aren’t any potential stains or major issues that should be addressed asap. Spray and Wash should be your best friend.
  • Washable supplies are important – A number of crafting, painting and art supplies are available in washable varieties. Make sure that your child is using materials that are labeled “washable”… even finger painting kits are available in washable options. Make sure to read the product’s label, don’t assume it’s washable.
  • Use a paint smock or cover-up – Have a paint shirt or paint smock available when the kids are painting or crafting. You can use an older sibling’s old t-shirt for younger siblings. make sure they roll up their sleeves and their cover-up is long enough to cover their shirt and at least a portion of their pants.

When you’re purchasing clothing for your child, just prepare for fancy, fun and full of dirt. Then you’ll always be prepared when they bring in a pocket full of special “presents” from the back yard.
